This method is great for growing strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, greens, ornamental plants. In winter, vertical beds of plastic pipes with perennial plants should be laid horizontally on the ground and covered.

Make vertical beds with your own hands is not difficult. Let's consider step by step instructions.

Pipe selection

First you need to determine the choice of pipe diameter and length. Both quality and quantity of the future crop depend on these quantities.

For example, to make vertical beds for cucumbers from a pipe 10 cm in diameter, one hole in each row is enough. When planting flowers, you can make two holes. If the diameter is 15 cm, the number of holes in the row, respectively, can be increased to three. The size of the holes is selected individually for each plant species. In the case of cucumbers, a window of 6x7 cm is sufficient.

When choosing the length of a plastic pipe, it should be borne in mind that by 1/5 it will be dug into the ground.

Cutting the holes

After the pipes for the future beds have been selected, we proceed to calculate and cut the holes.

Using roulette we make pipe markings as follows: we stretch the tape measure lengthwise, dividing the cross-section of the pipe into 4 parts. Then fix the ground level and make uniform cross marks, marking the rows. The height of rows when planting vegetables is 30-40 cm, for flowers it is enough 20-30 cm. Markers mark the places of cutting.

A circular drill or jigsaw can be used to cut holes. For jig saws, you can use a cardboard template.

Piping plastic pipes into the ground

After digging a hole of the required depth and slightly wider than the diameter of the pipe, fix it with rubble, stones and soil. Inside the pipe we fall asleep pebbles to the ground level.

If a vertical bed is installed in a house for year-round harvesting, you can place it in a bucket or flowerpot, reinforcing so as to avoid overturning.

Watering system

Ideal for irrigation of vertical beds - drip irrigation. For this, an irrigation hose is inserted inside the plastic pipe, and its direction( from above or below) does not matter and depends, rather, on the needs of the summer resident.

If it is not possible to install drip irrigation, traditional irrigation can be done by pouring water into the upper hole of the pipe and letting it drain down.

Ground filling and landing

The filling of the pipe with the soil occurs simultaneously with the planting of seedlings. You should be very careful with compost and fertilizers, since the risk of burning the root system is great.

Begin to fill the ground to the level of the first hole. Carefully place the bush, continue to fill the ground until we reach the next window. Thus, the planting goes from bottom to top, until the entire pipe is filled with soil.

If a vertical bed planted with different plant species, it should be borne in mind that many of them, especially strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, tend to curl down, drowning themselves other plants. Therefore, it is better to plant them in the lower tier.

So, we told how to make vertical beds, allowing you to harvest the year round even where there is practically no land. Truly, this method is unique.

When installing houses, in a greenhouse or on your site, vertical beds, as in the photo, you need to take care of the lighting. The more sunlight on all sides, the longer and more will please our garden with the harvest and flowering.
